Back then, weed was already knocking on the door of mainstream America, but it was a whole different beast from what I’d known. At East Carolina, the cannabis selection was humble: mostly shake, seeds, and whatever your buddy could scrape together. We were lucky to get a decent joint without a mouthful of stems or the occasional, dreaded twig.

Then came LA. Suddenly, I found myself in weed heaven. The black market was not only robust—it was downright sophisticated. I remember having weed delivered right to my office. No kidding. Some guy would show up, like a pizza guy for pot. The stuff was good too. Not the swishy, droopy leaf kind from back east, but the pungent, sticky, resin-drenched flowers that could actually knock you on your ass. But is it the same weed you find today? Hell no.

Cultivation: From Sun-Kissed Fields to High-Tech Fortresses

Back in the 1990s, outdoor grows ruled the landscape, at least in places where the weather cooperated. In California, that meant sun, soil, and seasons dictated the quality and quantity of your stash. Indoor cultivation was just getting its footing—growers tinkering in basements and warehouses, figuring out lights and ventilation. It was science, but still a bit of a wild west experiment.

Fast forward to today, and indoor cultivation has become the gold standard. It's like comparing a backyard barbecue to a NASA space station. Growers now wield precise control over light, temperature, humidity, and even carbon dioxide levels. This means consistent, potent harvests that can hit THC levels that would have made 1990s me drop the joint and crawl under the desk. The old days? A typical joint might have had 5-10% THC. Now? It’s not uncommon to see flower packing 25% or more, with concentrates reaching mind-boggling heights.

Products: From Simple Joints to a Galaxy of Options

The ‘90s were all about the flower. If you wanted to get high, you smoked dried buds rolled in paper or packed into pipes and bongs. Concentrates existed but were niche—hash being the classic, passed around in small circles, often imported from places like Morocco or Afghanistan. Edibles? Maybe homemade brownies if you were lucky, but nothing close to today’s industrially produced gummies, chocolates, or beverages.

Today’s cannabis landscape looks like something out of a sci-fi novel. Edibles are everywhere—from gummies that taste like candy to infused coffees and sodas. Concentrates come in dozens of forms: wax, shatter, live resin, distillate, and vape cartridges that promise a discreet, potent hit. The rise of vape pens is both a blessing and a headache, but undeniably changed the game. And let’s not forget the microdosing trend, where a few milligrams of THC or CBD can ease anxiety or boost focus without sending you to the couch.

Social Perception: From Pariah to Pop Culture Icon

In the ‘90s, cannabis was still very much in the shadows. The stigma was thick, reinforced by decades of prohibition propaganda. Being caught with weed could ruin your life, and it was easy to feel like a deviant—even among fellow college kids. Yet, the medical marijuana movement was bubbling under the surface, with patients and advocates fighting for recognition and legitimacy.

Today, that world feels light years away. Recreational cannabis is legal in over 20 states, with countless more easing restrictions or legalizing medical use. Cannabis is no longer the outlaw drug whispered about in dark alleys. It’s a booming industry with glossy dispensaries, celebrity endorsements, and a mainstream cultural embrace that includes everything from hip-hop anthems to wellness influencers touting CBD oils.

So What’s Changed? Everything and Nothing

The plant itself? Still Cannabis sativa (and its cousins). But how it’s grown, consumed, and perceived has undergone a revolution. The 1990s offered a rough draft—smoke it and hope for the best. Today, science and capital have refined cannabis into a controlled, predictable experience, one that appeals to everyone from the stoner poet to the corporate executive looking for a better night’s sleep.

Personally, I stand somewhere in the middle—a relic of the shake and seeds era who now finds himself navigating the dizzying array of products and strains with a mix of wonder and mild suspicion. The weed I had delivered to my LA office was a revelation in its time. The weed I consume now? It’s like stepping into a new world entirely, one where cannabis isn’t just a recreational escape but a complex botanical cocktail with endless potential.

The only thing constant in this ch, ch, changing cannabis landscape is change itself. And frankly, I’m here for the ride.

The Cannabis Contradiction

America Says Yes, Big Biz Says... Chong were considered young upstarts. Today, public support for legal marijuana is higher than ever—pun intended. Yet, despite America’s overwhelming thumbs-up on weed, some of the country's biggest institutions are still clutching their pearls.

Here at Apotheca, we’ve seen it firsthand. We open stores, offer carefully vetted, legally compliant products, and preach the good gospel of responsible cannabis use. But you’d think we were selling radioactive waste, judging by the reactions from social media platforms and major media companies who slam the digital doors in our faces and refuse our ad dollars. Money talks, but apparently, cannabis cash whispers.

Let’s face it—America loves weed. And when we say America, we’re not just talking about Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg (God bless ‘em). A recent poll from Performance Research and Full Circle Research revealed that a solid majority of sports fans—from NFL diehards to NASCAR junkies, NBA hoopheads to Wimbledon obsessives—think it’s perfectly acceptable for cannabis companies to sponsor their favorite teams. And why wouldn’t they? Cannabis companies represent relaxation, good vibes, and, let's not forget, substantial economic opportunities.

But here’s the rub: Even though fans and everyday citizens are onboard, most professional teams treat cannabis partnerships like a radioactive hot potato. Sure, they'll take sponsorship dollars from beer companies promoting alcohol, the drug that’s been fueling questionable decisions since humanity first stomped grapes. But cannabis? Suddenly everyone turns into the town preacher.

What gives?

It’s not exactly a mystery. Behind the scenes, pulling the strings, lurk two of America's most influential lobbies: Big Pharma and Big Alcohol. These are the folks who write enormous checks to politicians, pay millions to media companies, and have cozy relationships with the same social platforms that ban cannabis advertisements faster than you can say "terms of service violation."

Let's unpack that for a moment. Big Pharma—the industry that brought you the opioid crisis, side effects lists longer than a CVS receipt, and drugs for restless leg syndrome (seriously, that’s a thing)—wants you nowhere near a safe, natural alternative to prescription meds. If Americans turn to cannabis instead of opioids, anti-anxiety pills, and sleeping tablets, their profit margins could shrink from obscene to merely enormous.

Then there’s Big Alcohol. These purveyors of hangovers and bad karaoke nights have built empires selling a drug directly responsible for millions of deaths globally each year. Cannabis legalization threatens their bottom line as more adults opt for gummies and THC seltzers rather than beer and whiskey. So what do they do? They lobby, they fund campaigns, and they pressure institutions into keeping cannabis on the outside looking in.

But here’s the thing about progress: It’s stubborn. It keeps knocking on the door until you let it in—or until it kicks the door down. Americans have spoken loud and clear: cannabis legalization is a no-brainer. It’s one of the few issues today where your Trump-loving uncle and your Bernie-supporting cousin might actually high-five in agreement.

Yet our leaders, institutions, and corporate bigwigs are lagging like a middle-aged dad in a footrace against Usain Bolt. How much longer can they keep up this charade? Not long, friends. Not long.

Cannabis is already a multi-billion-dollar industry—and growing faster than Big Pharma can say "Ask your doctor if this wildly overpriced pill is right for you." Sports teams, businesses, and media companies that continue to ignore cannabis are turning down revenue, ignoring their customers, and, frankly, making fools of themselves.

At Apotheca, we're done playing nice. We’re not asking for permission anymore; we're demanding our rightful place in the conversation. We're not just a dispensary; we're a part of a cultural shift toward wellness, choice, and freedom. The people have voted. The poll numbers don’t lie.

So here's a friendly message to Big Pharma, Big Alcohol, and every major media platform stubbornly holding onto prohibition-era prejudices: You can join the future or get steamrolled by it. Cannabis isn't going away. Neither are we.

Pass the popcorn—this is gonna be fun.

Let’s Be Blunt: Legal Weed Works

From cutting coffers, and even improve public health outcomes—all while nudging people away from tobacco and alcohol—I’d say you’re either smoking something or onto something. Turns out, you’re onto something. A decade of data suggests that legalizing adult access to cannabis often correlates with lower adolescent use, not higher. One study of Washington state found that legalization caused a 22 percent drop in 8th‑grade cannabis use, and a 12.7 percent drop among 10th graders, with no increase in 12th graders. That is consistent with other states where youth trends track similarly regardless of legalization status. In a more general sense, federal data shows current adolescent marijuana use declining nationwide from 23.1 percent in 2011 to 15.8 percent in 2021, and first‑time use before age 13 falling from 8.1 to 4.9 percent—a long‑term drop that coincides with increasing legalization, not a surge in it.

Now as for opioids, the claim that cannabis access reduces overdose deaths is more contested. Early research did suggest that states with medical cannabis programs had about 24.8 percent lower opioid overdose mortality compared with states without such laws but later investigations—including a Stanford re‑analysis—found no consistent effect of legal marijuana on overdose death rates. Some research does suggest modest reductions in non‑medical prescription opioid use when medical cannabis is legalized, especially among those already using cannabis heavily, but the evidence remains weak and inconsistent. Nevertheless, lower opioid prescribing and non‑medical use in some contexts might imply safer alternatives for some patients, even if the overdose argument is not iron‑clad.

The benefit of legalization improving quality and safety is straightforward: regulated markets enforce potency limits, packaging standards, testing protocols, and age checks. Contrast that with illicit black‑market weed laced with unknown fillers, unpredictable potency, and no warnings. Regulators in states like Colorado and Illinois have enforced testing, child‑proof packaging, and quality control. While black‑market analogues remain, legalized markets bring at least a baseline of consumer safety. Reviews confirm that public health–oriented regulations matter for promoting responsible use.

Tax revenue is one of the most tangible upsides. Colorado alone pulled in $44 million in recreational cannabis taxes in 2014, rising to over $135 million in 2015, and reaching over $1 billion by 2019; those dollars have funded education, youth programs, health initiatives, and infrastructure. National-level analysis estimates that cannabis legalization raised tax revenue from $1.7 billion in 2019 to $3.7 billion in 2021 across the U.S.

Regarding crime, it’s true that legalization dramatically reduces cannabis-related arrests. In Washington D.C., possession arrests plunged by 98 percent in the year after legalization, while broader cannabis offenses dropped 85 percent. Research also suggests a slight downward tendency in violent and property crimes in states with legal cannabis compared to prohibition states—even if the difference is modest and not always statistically significant .

Public health outcomes tied to safe cannabis access depend heavily on policy design: regulating potency, packaging, retail density, marketing, driving laws, youth education and so on. Advocates argue that legalization reduces criminal justice burdens, shifts resources toward health and education, and—in theory—improves traffic safety, though critics counter that without well‑designed regulation, legalization can exacerbate harms. In Colorado, for instance, hospital visits involving cannabis more than doubled soon after legalization, and there were increases in traffic collisions and accidental ingestion by children—a clear reminder that regulation must be responsible.

Substitution effects between cannabis and alcohol or tobacco are also supported in part. One panel study found a modest reduction in tax revenue from alcohol and tobacco after legalization, potentially reflecting consumers switching goods—and overall a net revenue gain of around $14 per capita per year. Other data suggest modest decreases in youth alcohol and e‑cigarette use in jurisdictions with retail cannabis sales, and no overall rise in youth cannabis initiation. And some surveys note that cannabis legalization correlates with lower tobacco and alcohol consumption, although the strength of that effect varies.

Taken all together, the assertion that legalization lowers teen usage, reduces opioid harms, improves safety and standards, raises revenue, lowers crime, improves public health outcomes, and nudges people away from alcohol and tobacco has some support—but with caveats. Teen use tends not to rise. Poisonings and traffic risks can rise if regulation is weak. The opioid mortality connection is at best modest and contested. But the tax benefits and criminal justice savings are real. When bent through proper policy design, legalization can deliver a package of positive outcomes that shadow prohibition with red tape and enforcement disasters. It’s not a silver bullet. It’s more like a well‑timed, well‑regulated replacement for the illicit cannabis economy—one that returns revenue to society, unlocks resources for education and healthcare, and allows adults to make their own choices under safer conditions.

They Work for Us

Cannabis, Corruption, and the Now we need it to win the politics.

Roughly 70% of Americans support legalization. That’s not a fringe movement — that’s a national consensus. Conservatives, liberals, veterans, parents, farmers, small business owners — this isn’t just stoners in a drum circle anymore. It’s mainstream. It’s reality. It’s here.

And yet… we’re still getting stonewalled.

Dan Patrick in Texas is a prime example. Despite overwhelming support from Texans for access to cannabis — especially veterans and patients — Patrick and his allies continue to obstinate. Why? Because it’s not about what the people want. It’s about who’s cutting the checks.

The cannabis industry, especially hemp businesses like ours, operates on a razor’s edge. We take huge financial risks. We have little or no access to banking. We face constant legal whiplash from lawmakers who don't even understand what they're regulating. And despite all of that, we’re still here. Still building. Still growing. Still creating jobs and changing lives.

Meanwhile, many of our elected officials act like it’s still 1987. They’ll bend over backwards for lobbyists, pharmaceutical companies, and alcohol conglomerates — all while ignoring the will of their own voters. It’s infuriating. It’s shameful. And it’s exactly why your vote matters more than ever.

This isn’t just about cannabis.

This is about democracy. About reminding politicians who they actually work for. Spoiler alert: it’s not Anheuser-Busch. It’s not Pfizer. It’s you.

If you care about cannabis — as medicine, as economic opportunity, as freedom — you have to care about voting. Because the reality is, politicians don’t fear tweets. They don’t fear logic. They fear ballots.

If you're sitting on the sidelines thinking your voice doesn’t matter, that nothing ever changes — guess what? That’s exactly what they want. That’s how they stay in power. Apathy is their best friend.

So be loud. Be annoying. Email your rep. Show up to town halls. Ask them if they support safe, tested, regulated cannabis products — and if not, why not? Watch them squirm. Make them earn your vote or lose it.

Because we are the future. Cannabis is the future. And if our representatives can’t see that, we’ll vote in people who can.

They don’t get to ignore us anymore.

Buzzkill for strange is happening in America’s bars, living rooms, and backyards. People are still drinking, but not the way they used to. They're swapping whiskey for watermelon THC spritzers. They're microdosing instead of bingeing. And increasingly, they’re realizing they don’t need alcohol to unwind—they just need a better buzz.

And cannabis-infused drinks are delivering exactly that.

The Rise of the Buzz Without the Baggage

The latest industry analysis, reported by Marijuana Moment, makes it plain: when states legalize cannabis, alcohol takes a hit. The data shows alcohol sales drop by up to 15% in newly legal markets. That’s not a blip. That’s a trend—and one that has alcohol executives sweating through their polos at “innovation” summits.

But the why behind it? That’s where things get interesting.

Cannabis drinks—Delta-9 seltzers, THC tonics, microdosed mood-lifters—offer something booze can’t: a functional, feel-good experience without the hangover. No late-night regrets. No sloppy texts. No waking up feeling like you got kicked in the liver by a mule wearing bowling shoes.

Instead, consumers get something modern alcohol can’t deliver: clarity, control, and in many cases, health-conscious calm.

The End of Barf Culture

It’s not that cannabis drinks are healthier in the kale-and-spin-class sense. It’s that they’re not destructive. No one’s crashed a car or started a bar fight because of a 5mg THC spritzer. No one’s vomiting on their shoes from a microdose of hemp-derived Delta-9.

Cannabis drinks are light, social, and above all, intentional. You drink them to elevate—not to erase yourself.

And while Gen Z gets the credit for “killing beer,” it’s broader than that. Millennials, Gen Xers, and even some Boomers are opting out of alcohol not because they’re puritanical, but because they’ve found something better.

Booze Is on the Defensive

The alcohol industry knows exactly what’s happening—and it doesn’t like it. That same Marijuana Moment piece quotes investment analysts warning that cannabis is a "significant threat" to the alcohol sector. Liquor companies are scrambling to invest in THC beverage startups or slap CBD into canned cocktails as a distraction.

Too late. The cultural shift is underway.

Bars across the country are stocking cannabis seltzers. Restaurants are building zero-proof menus featuring hemp infusions. And in states like North Carolina, where hemp-derived THC is thriving under the 2018 Farm Bill, it’s an all-out renaissance. You can get buzzed without breaking the law—or your pancreas.

This Isn’t Just About Health—It’s About Choice

Let’s be honest: alcohol’s not going anywhere. There will always be bourbon snobs, craft beer zealots, and red wine romantics.

But for millions of people, the default drink is changing. The ritual is the same—crack a can, take the edge off, toast with friends—but the chemistry is different. Cannabis lets you turn the volume down without blacking out the screen. It lets you feel good without paying the price in the morning.

That’s not just a health upgrade. It’s a generational reprogramming of what it means to “have a drink.”

Welcome to the Infused Era

Cannabis drinks won’t replace alcohol entirely—but they don’t need to. All they have to do is offer a better alternative for even some occasions, and the numbers start shifting. The more people discover THC-infused beverages, the more obvious the appeal becomes:

No hangovers

No empty calories

No liver damage

No DUI

And most importantly—no regrets

You don’t get that from a tequila shot. You do get it from a microdosed cannabis beverage chilled to perfection.

Final Toast: To the Next Buzz

This isn’t just about weed beating booze in a cage match. It’s about options. It’s about waking up with your dignity intact. It’s about drinking something that makes you laugh instead of cry, groove instead of rage, chill instead of collapse.

The future of drinking? It’s here. It’s infused. And it doesn’t come with a warning label about liver failure.

So here’s to the death of hangovers—and the rise of the happy, high hour.

Three Days of Peace, Music

… and Copious Weed: Woodstock’s Smoky Two dozen NYPD officers flank the sixth-floor suite; teenage shrieks ricochet off Park Avenue. Inside, Bob Dylan fishes a baggie from his jacket while John Lennon peers over horn-rimmed glasses like a kid eyeing forbidden candy. Road-manager Victor Maymudes rolls a rough-cut joint, passes it to Lennon, who hands it to “royal taster” Ringo Starr. One cough later and the ceiling is “kind of moving down,” Ringo reports. The Beatles dissolve into giggles—and pop music’s clean-cut age evaporates.

Cultural Context

Until that night, the Beatles were poster boys for fizzy pop and matching suits. Dylan mistook their lyric “I can’t hide” for “I get high” and assumed they were already seasoned smokers. Brian Epstein admitted they’d barely tried pot in Hamburg and “felt nothing.” Dylan obliged. Within months the lads’ mop-top harmonies thickened into the rubbery grooves of Rubber Soul—their self-described “pot album.” Critics would later trace the leap from “She Loves You” to “Norwegian Wood” directly through a Manhattan haze.

How One Hotel Suite Reshaped Culture

Songwriting Grows Up. Lennon called cannabis “the first drug that seemed to open my mind.” Suddenly lyrical innocence gave way to introspection, wordplay, and Indian drones, pushing rock radio into previously uncharted daydreams.

The British Invasion Gets a Counterculture Upgrade. Weed-tinged Beatles interviews filtered across TV screens, softening public panic about marijuana by attaching it to the era’s most adored faces.

Influencer Marketing, 1964-Style. Within weeks, London fashion editors were quoting Dylan’s raspy drawl and speculating about the Beatles’ “new vibe.” No paid placement, just buzz—literal and figurative.

Crossover Appeal. The moment stitched folk’s protest intellect (Dylan) to pop’s mass reach (the Beatles), creating the template every crossover act—from Outkast to Billie Eilish—would chase.

Pass the Mic

Do you remember the first song that ever sounded better after a toke? Drop your track in the comments and tag a friend who still thinks “I Want to Hold Your Hand” is lyrically innocent. Next up: 400,000 muddy kids and the three-day hotbox that proved stoners could keep the peace.

From Fear-Film to Cult A lecture hall packed with giggling college kids has just paid a dollar apiece to the brand-new NORML chapter. On screen, a wild-eyed pianist hammers away as “marijuana fiends” descend into murder, manslaughter, and window-jumping hysteria. Popcorn flies when a student shouts, “Somebody pass the actual reefer!” The fundraiser nets $16,000, and a Depression-era scare film becomes stoner comedy gold.

The Cultural Set-Up

Reefer Madness began life in 1936 as Tell Your Children, a church-funded morality flick shown at PTA meetings to warn parents about “devil weed.” After filming wrapped, exploitation producer Dwain Esper bought the negative, spliced in racier shots, and toured the movie under a buffet of titles—Dope Addict, Doped Youth, The Burning Question—wherever local censors looked the other way.

Intended to terrify, the script delivered fever-dream vignettes—jazz parties, hit-and-run carnage, even attempted rape—attributed wholly to a puff of “loco weed.” Audiences eventually caught on: the film’s straight-faced insanity was funnier than any studio comedy around.

How the Hysteria Backfired

First, the film’s straight-laced performers and breathless warnings aged into unintentional satire. By the late 1960s campus audiences weren’t frightened—they were howling with laughter, proving that propaganda sprinkled with jazz parties and murder melodrama collapses under its own campy weight.

Second, activist Keith Stroup unearthed a Library of Congress print in 1972, bought it for $297, and toured college theaters for a buck a ticket. The screenings raised roughly $16,000 for NORML’s first legalization campaign— meaning a film designed to kill interest in cannabis literally funded the modern reform movement.

Third, New Line Cinema spotted the public-domain loophole, added Reefer Madness to its roving midnight-movie circuit, and made a tidy profit from stoned giggles. The success helped establish the midnight-cult model that later launched everything from Pink Flamingos to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Finally, the very title preserved jazz-era slang; “reefer” might have faded without this cinematic punch-line. Instead, the term lived on in hip-hop lyrics, headline puns, and—yes—SEO searches that still steer curious readers to places like Apotheca.

The Takeaway

The film proves a timeless truth: exaggeration ages poorly. Today’s doom-and-gloom click-bait about THCa or vape panics echoes Reefer Madness in real time—and savvy consumers can smell the melodrama. Our job is to replace hysteria with humor, facts, and high-quality flower.

Pass the Mic

Have a friend who still quotes “THE KILLER WEED”? Send them this article—and a gentle reminder that the only thing deadly about modern cannabis is the discount bin on 4/20. Stay tuned for #8, when Bob Dylan slips the Fab Four their first joint and music history gets a little hazier.

Satchmo’s Gage

How Jazz Blew Cannabis Into America’s Ears

Tripp Liles

Series Introduction.

Every April 20th used to feel like a communal high-five for the plant. Lately, though, 4/20 has started to look more like cannabis’ own Black Friday—an elbows-out dash for cut-rate ounces and BOGO vapes. This series is our antidote to the bargain-bin mindset. Instead of sprinting toward the lowest price, we’re hitting pause to celebrate the weed itself—and the pop-culture mavericks who carried it from back-alley taboo to living-room normal.

Over ten installments we’ll rewind through a century of culture-shifting moments, tracing how trumpet solos, cult films, hip-hop beats, and even Martha Stewart’s CBD gummies turned a criminalized herb into a household staple. Think of it as a joyride through the greatest hits of cannabis’ unofficial PR campaign, fueled not by ad budgets but by artists, rebels, and everyday fans who refused to snuff out the spark.

So pack a bowl of curiosity, not consumer fatigue, and join us as we toast the people and pop flashes that made modern cannabis culture possible. First up: Louis Armstrong and the jazz-age “gage” that started it all.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Cold-open—Los Angeles, 1930.
Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong steps out of the Cotton Club for a breather, trumpet case in one hand, a thin hand-rolled cigarette in the other. A beat-cop saunters up, nostrils flaring. Armstrong, ever the showman, grins and offers the officer a drag. Instead of swapping solos, the cop swaps out handcuffs; Armstrong finishes the night’s set before being hauled downtown for smoking what he affectionately called “gage.”

The Cultural Backbeat

Jazz was America’s first mass-media youth movement, and its stars needed staying power to jam until dawn. Booze made you sloppy; cannabis—so the musicians said—kept the riffs inventive and the vibe convivial. Armstrong discovered weed in Chicago in 1928 and soon preached its virtues to anyone within earshot, insisting it was “a thousand times better than whiskey” for chasing away the blues.

Armstrong’s bandmates joined the “vipers” (slang for jazz smokers who hissed their joints), creating an underground fraternity whose membership card was a lit jay passed left. The plant’s profile climbed in lockstep with hot-jazz record sales; suddenly, Kansas City teenagers were whispering about “gage” as eagerly as they practiced trumpet licks. Historians now peg the jazz scene as cannabis’ first true influencer network—decades before hashtags.

Ripple Effects That Still Resonate

Counter-Narrative to Temperance: While Prohibition demonized booze, Armstrong embodied an alternative: a functional, joyful pot user whose artistry flourished. The contrast cracked moralist arguments wide open.

Slang That Stuck: Words like gage, muggles, and viper filtered from bandstands into street corners, proving language can launder stigma faster than any lobbyist.

The Cops Take Note: High-profile busts like Armstrong’s gave federal agents a headline-friendly villain and helped grease the skids for the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act, the country’s first big cannabis crackdown. (Call it the original cancel culture.)

Blueprint for Celebrity Advocacy: Long before Snoop or Willie, Armstrong spoke openly about his use—risking arrest and career blowback. That candor set the stage for every star who would one-day stamp their face on a preroll tin.

Apotheca Takeaway

When you crack open a Jazz Cabbage-inspired gummy in 2025, you’re vibing with a century-old lineage of creativity, community, and quiet rebellion. Armstrong proved that cannabis could swing rather than stumble—a narrative Apotheca still champions every time we tell customers that plant freedom fuels artistic freedom.

Pass the Mic

If this story hit the right note, share it with your favorite horn player—or at least the friend who never skips “What a Wonderful World.” Subscribe so you don’t miss #9, where a fear-mongering B-movie accidentally became weed’s funniest endorsement.

It's 420...Let's Rock

A little Vibe For The Highest of Hoildays

Tripp Liles

It’s everyones favorite week…the week which contains the 20th of April. Army vet who traded Eisenhower‑era conformity for a bullhorn and a stack of hemp facts that rattled the DEA harder than a drummer at a Dead show. On 4/20, as clouds rise and playlists spin, it’s worth retelling the rebel gospel of the man they crowned The Emperor of Hemp.

From Goldwater to Green Leaf

Herer started adult life as a Goldwater Republican, the kind who kept their hair short and distrust of government even shorter. Then California’s counterculture happened. In 1973 he opened his first head shop and discovered an inconvenient truth: almost everything he’d been taught about cannabis was bunk. The veteran with crew‑cut discipline morphed into a fire‑eyed evangelist, founding H.E.M.P. (Help End Marijuana Prohibition) and criss‑crossing the country with a card table, voter‑registration clipboards, and the conviction that hemp could replace oil, paper, and half the junk in your medicine cabinet.

The Emperor Wears No Clothes—and Everyone Noticed

Herer’s life’s work arrived in 1985 as a self‑published brick of a book stuffed with footnotes, newspaper clippings, and righteous fury. The Emperor Wears No Clothes argued—loudly—that criminalizing a plant capable of making fuel, fiber, food, and fun was the greatest policy face‑plant since Prohibition. The book offered $100,000 to anyone who could disprove its claims; four decades later, nobody’s collected. It’s still cited in legalization hearings from Boise to Brussels.

Arrests, Ballot Battles, and a Couple of Presidential Runs

Herer wasn’t content to write; he wanted laws rewritten. He was arrested more than once for civil‑disobedience tabling on federal property, and in 1988 and ’92 he ran for president on the Grassroots Party ticket—garnering a few thousand protest votes and a mountain of press. Every campaign stop was a teach‑in: hemp for paper, hemp for plastics, hemp to save the damned planet. Even critics admitted the man’s enthusiasm could turn a D.A.R.E. instructor into a hemp‑crete contractor after one conversation.

The Strain That Immortalized the Man

Sensi Seeds thanked him the stoner way: by breeding a sativa‑dominant marvel that married Haze, Northern Lights #5, and Shiva Skunk, christening it Jack Herer. Debuting in 1994, the strain ripped first place at that year’s High Times Cannabis Cup and has been stacking trophies—and elevating afternoons—ever since. A citrus‑pine perfume, electric creativity, and a clear‑head finish made it the gold standard for daytime inspiration, an herbal avatar of the man himself.

Legacy in Smoke and Stone

Herer passed in 2010, but the aftershocks rumble on: the annual Jack Herer Cups, hemp‑crete startups quoting his data, and every budtender who confidently explains that hemp and marijuana are the same plant wearing different legal hats. His insistence on science over stigma paved the road we ride today—selling Farm‑Bill‑compliant flower that’s chemically identical to what Colorado dispensaries slang for twice the tax. If you enjoy lighting a legal joint this 4/20, tip your hat (and your lighter) to the Hemperor.

A 4/20 Toast

So spark a cone of the strain that bears his name, crack a Farm‑Bill seltzer, and read a few pages of Emperor. Then remember Herer’s favorite challenge: “Show me a better planet‑saving crop.” Until someone does, the torch he passed is ours to carry—through smoky dens, legislative chambers, and every curious mind that asks, “Wait…why was this plant ever illegal?”

Jack Herer made sure we never stop asking. That’s why he’s more than history; he’s the reason 4/20 feels like freedom.

Happy high holiday, fellow hemp warriors.

High Somewhere between Tax Day’s hangover and the first genuine whiff of spring, April 20 materializes like a green flash over the horizon, beckoning stoners, soccer moms, hedge‑fund libertarians, and the occasional renegade priest to spark up in unison at—what else—4:20 p.m. The rite feels as old as rock‑and‑roll, but, like most great American traditions, it began with bored teenagers looking for trouble.

Back in 1971, five wise‑cracking pals at San Rafael High School—forever immortalized as “the Waldos”—got wind of a rumored abandoned weed patch on the Point Reyes coast. They’d meet by the Louis Pasteur statue after sports practice, pile into a beat‑up ’66 Chevy, and set off treasure‑hunting at exactly 4:20 p.m. “4:20 Louis” was the original rallying cry; soon it was just “4:20,” the secret handshake that unlocked a clandestine realm of giggles and Grape Kool‑Aid. The crop was never found, but the code stuck like resin to a pipe.

Fate handed the Waldos a megaphone when one of their crew landed a gig as a roadie for the Grateful Dead. Deadheads, ever thirsty for inside jokes and illicit aromas, adopted the cipher, scribbling “420” on backstage passes and concert flyers. In 1991 a High Times reporter stumbled onto one of those flyers and blasted the number into the counter‑culture stratosphere. By the decade’s end, “4/20” wasn’t just a time—it was a date circled, highlighted, and resin‑stained on every dorm‑room calendar from Berkeley to Burlington.

The holiday metastasized in glorious, skunky fashion. What began as a curb‑side giggle became a full‑blown protest picnic in Golden Gate Park, a smoke‑heavy parody of the Boston Tea Party—only with Doritos instead of gunpowder. These days you can’t swing a lava lamp without knocking over a “Mile High 420 Fest” banner or a boutique brewer promising an IPA that tastes like freshly mowed dispensary. Last year’s bacchanal drew tens of thousands to Denver Civic Center Park, while digital smoke‑outs on Twitch clocked seven‑figure views—proof that, in an era of remote everything, even a contact high can be livestreamed.

Yet 4/20 isn’t merely a mass hot‑box stunt; it’s a barometer for the republic’s evolving hypocrisy. In 2012, Colorado voters flipped prohibition the bird, unleashing a retail boom that has since shoveled billions into state coffers. Thirty‑plus states now flirt with legal adult use, and the Biden administration is flirting back—dangling rescheduling and mass pardons like political party favors. Still, the plant remains Schedule I at the federal level, cozied up with heroin—a bureaucratic hallucination more potent than anything you’ll roll this weekend.

If the War on Drugs was Uncle Sam’s longest bad trip, 4/20 became its unofficial cease‑fire. Each joint sparked in public is a citrus‑scented vote against the machinery that still cages people—disproportionately Black and brown—for what’s now a lifestyle brand traded on Wall Street. The holiday’s rowdiest celebrants may not be quoting Michelle Alexander between bong rips, but the ritual stubbornly reminds lawmakers that the genie is not only out of the bottle—it’s running the merch table.

And the circus keeps mutating. In 2025 the stoner sabbath collides with Easter Sunday—a mash‑up tailor‑made for late‑night monologues and cathedral side‑eye. Somewhere, an ambitious bakery is glazing cannabis‑infused hot‑cross buns; somewhere else, a choirboy is Googling “incense vs. sativa terpenes.” The convergence is absurd, hilarious, maybe sacrilegious—exactly the kind of high irony that would make Hunter S. Thompson mix Wild Turkey with righteous laughter.

Corporate America, sniffing profit in the wind, now drops 4/20 promos the way Hallmark slaps penguins on Christmas ornaments. Fast‑food chains tweet wink‑wink discounts on “munchie meals,” and sterile MSOs sling neon gummies with the same reverence Anheuser‑Busch reserves for the Super Bowl. Purists cry sell‑out, but let’s be honest: a little capitalism keeps the lights on at the grow house. The trick is to remember why the day mattered in the first place—shared rebellion, community, and the simple joy of exhaling a cloud that says, “We’re still here.”

So how to celebrate in 2025? Light something truthful. Toast the Waldos, tip your cap to the Dead, and raise a fist for every lifer still waiting on clemency while Silicon Valley funds weed‑delivery drones. Skip the sloppy Instagram flex; instead, pass the joint to a curious novice and walk them through the terpene bouquet like a deranged sommelier. When the clock slams into 4:20 p.m., take a deep pull and remember that history is written by the victorious—and today, the pen reeks gloriously of Blue Dream.

Now queue your favorite Steely Dan bootleg, stock up on snacks that crunch loudly enough to drown out cable news, and savor the sweet, improbable fact that a teenage treasure hunt turned into a global act of defiance. In a nation that specializes in moral panic, 4/20 stands as a laughing, coughing reminder that some revolutions start long after school, behind the bleachers, with nothing more than a scrap of paper and a lighter that works on the first flick.

Cannabis Cocktails

The Next Bar Okay, maybe not dead—but it’s definitely getting some competition from a new kind of buzz. Welcome to the golden age of cannabis cocktails, where the old rules of nightlife are dissolving like a THC tincture in club soda.

Gone are the days of sugary shots and regrettable well liquor. Today’s drink menus are being rewritten by bartenders who moonlight as herbalists and chemistry nerds, turning cannabinoids into cocktail ingredients with the same reverence once reserved for mezcal and obscure amari. And guess what? It works.

Booze Is Losing Its Cool

Alcohol had a good run. From Hemingway’s daiquiris to Carrie Bradshaw’s cosmos, it’s been the default social lubricant for centuries. But lately, the hangovers are hitting harder, the anxiety is getting louder, and the vibes are just... off. Gen Z, wellness junkies, and even the occasional grizzled millennial are starting to ask the big question: Why am I drinking this if I’m going to feel like garbage tomorrow?

Enter cannabis.

THC seltzers, infused bitters, and terpene-flavored mocktails are muscling their way into bar programs and backyard parties alike. These aren’t edibles-in-disguise—they’re curated experiences. Low-dose, plant-forward, and—when done right—utterly delicious.

This Isn’t Your Dorm Room Brownie

Cannabis mixology is a different beast. You’re not melting mystery butter into cake batter here. You’re working with emulsified tinctures, fast-acting nanoemulsions, and precisely dosed syrups that play well with citrus, herbs, and bubbles. A 2.5mg THC spritz with lemon and thyme? Sophisticated. A 10mg Delta-9 sangria on a rooftop bar? Yes, please.

And unlike alcohol, cannabinoids come with options. Want something relaxing? Drop in a little CBN. Need a lift? Try a sativa-forward terpene blend. Trying to avoid awkward conversations altogether? A dash of CBD will do wonders.

Bars Are Catching On

It’s not just your crafty cousin experimenting at home anymore. Forward-thinking venues—especially in hemp-friendly states—are building full menus around cannabis beverages. From THC mocktail flights to “high happy hours,” the cannabis drink movement is quietly staging a coup behind the bar.

And it’s not just about avoiding booze. It’s about enhancing the ritual. You still get the glass, the garnish, the moment of clinking and sipping. But instead of liver damage and karaoke regret, you get mellow euphoria and the sudden realization that everyone at the table is way more interesting than you thought.

One Drink, One Hit, No Regrets

There’s a phrase bartenders love: “the second drink is the decision drink.” But in the cannabis cocktail era, the first one is already the choice. You’ve chosen clarity over chaos. Flavor over firewater. A mellow evening over a blackout brunch.

The only downside? You might actually remember everything that happened last night.

Welcome to Weed Black Friday

420 and the Business A whispered signal passed between long-haired degenerates and trenchcoat philosophers. You had to know to know. Maybe it was written in Sharpie on a record sleeve. Maybe it was muttered during third-period chemistry class, right before someone lit a joint out of an apple in the parking lot.

Today? It’s a full-on capitalist fever dream. 420 has gone from counterculture ritual to the cannabis industry’s version of Black Friday. A day where rebellious spirit and corporate strategy go together like rolling papers and stock tickers. And like any good American tradition, it’s now about one thing: moving product.

Let’s not mince words—April 20th is the single biggest sales day in the cannabis calendar. In 2023, legal U.S. cannabis sales topped $160 million on that day alone. To put that in perspective, that’s about what Americans spend on Valentine’s Day candy. Except instead of chocolate hearts, you get THC gummies shaped like alien heads.

Dispensaries know this. Hell, they depend on it. For weeks leading up to the blessed holiday, retail workers are buried under pallets of pre-rolls and gummies. Graphics teams are sweating out limited-edition posters with “420 SALE” written in fonts loud enough to trigger an anxiety attack. And every marketing manager in the game is trying to cram as much weed slang as humanly possible into one email subject line:
🌿 Get LIT with 42% OFF ALL DANK! One Day Only! 🌿

It’s chaos. Beautiful, sticky chaos.

Walk into any decent shop on 4/20 and you’ll see a line out the door. Not the normal polite trickle of middle-aged dads and nervous first-timers. No, this is a line of crust punks, yoga teachers, and gig workers all doing the same mental math: “If I buy three ounces now, I won’t have to come back until July. Maybe August.”

Meanwhile, brands are pulling out every stunt they can think of. Flash sales. Holographic packaging. Collaborations with rappers, influencers, and local DJs who still live with their mom. Some even try to go classy, offering tasting flights of different terpene profiles, like it’s a goddamn Napa Valley wine bar for potheads.

And it’s not just the small fry cashing in. Big Weed—the well-funded, khaki-wearing class of cannabis CEOs—is treating 420 like a shareholder holiday. Earnings reports circle the date like vultures. Retail forecasts spike. Stock options vest. Some guy in a Patagonia vest says the phrase “activating the cannabis demographic” in a boardroom without irony.

Yes, it’s ridiculous. And yes, it’s glorious.

But here’s the thing: for all the commercial noise, 420 still matters. It still means something. It’s a one-day reminder that this industry—this plant—isn’t just about profit margins and branding exercises. It’s about survival. It’s about normalization. And it’s about joy. Don’t forget that part—joy.

Because the world tried for damn near a century to stamp this thing out. They criminalized it. Demonized it. Spun enough propaganda to keep Reefer Madness in Netflix rotation forever. And still, here we are: in a legal(ish) market, in broad daylight, buying weed like it’s toothpaste.

So yeah, it’s funny to see “Sativa Saturdays” and “Munchie Monday” blasted across highway billboards. And sure, it’s weird that you can now order a vape pen with the same app you use to get Thai food. But it’s also a sign of something deeper. A strange victory. A consumer uprising dressed in tie-dye and smelling like Durban Poison.

420 is our holiday. And like all great American holidays, it’s become a commercial beast. But unlike Presidents’ Day or Columbus Day, this one was earned. Not handed down by tradition, but carved out by defiance, joy, and a little bit of smoke.

So on this high holy day of capitalism and cannabis, go ahead—take the BOGO deal on pre-rolls. Stock up on peach rings dosed with 50mg. But maybe, just maybe, light one up for the weirdos who started it all. The ones who risked arrest just to keep the spark alive.

Because thanks to them, the revolution now comes with a receipt.

Hemp States Are the What did they do instead? They built a bloated, tax-heavy, bureaucratic Frankenstein of a system that makes the DMV look efficient.

Meanwhile, down here in the wild, wonderful world of hemp states—especially North Carolina—we’re doing just fine. Actually, scratch that. We’re thriving. We’re selling the same flower, stronger edibles, and shipping it nationwide without a government babysitter breathing down our necks. And the best part? Our customers aren’t treated like criminals before they even walk through the door.

Hemp states figured it out. Marijuana states, on the other hand, are drowning in their own regulatory mess—and the sad truth is, they did it to themselves.

Legal Marijuana: A Racket Disguised as Freedom

The promise of legalization was simple: Take cannabis out of the illegal market, make it accessible, and let people do what they’ve always done—just without the threat of jail time. But instead of freedom, legal states got… whatever the hell this is.

Insane Taxes – Some states are slapping 50% taxes on cannabis products. Fifty. Freaking. Percent. That’s worse than sin taxes on cigarettes and booze, except cannabis was never supposed to be a sin.

Big Brother Controls Everything – Track-and-trace systems. Purchase limits. Background checks just to open a dispensary. It’s easier to open a liquor store than it is to sell legal weed in these states.

Bureaucracy on Steroids – Licensing takes years. Fees are absurd. Cities and counties can still ban dispensaries if they feel like it. Congratulations, you’re “legal,” but good luck actually running a business.

The result? People are STILL buying from the black market. Illegal delivery services are thriving in places like California and New York because they offer better weed at better prices with less hassle. Legalization wasn’t supposed to create more illegal sales, but here we are.

Hemp States: Winning By Default

Now let’s talk about the other side of the coin: hemp states like North Carolina, where we’re playing the game on our own terms.

Same Flower, No Nonsense – THCa flower? It’s identical to what’s sold in marijuana states—it just has a different label. Science didn’t change. The plant didn’t change. The only thing that changed was how we categorized it to avoid government overreach.

Edibles That Actually Hit – In marijuana states, you’re stuck with a 10mg THC limit per serving because some suit in a government office decided you can’t be trusted with more. Hemp states? We’re selling 100mg+ gummies that ship straight to your door. You want a real edible experience? Skip the dispensary and hit up a hemp shop.

Freedom to Sell, Freedom to Buy – No dispensary licenses. No artificial supply chain restrictions. No treating customers like suspects in a drug sting. Just good products, fair prices, and a thriving market.

Hemp states cracked the code: Work with the law instead of fighting against it. We found the loophole, and we ran with it—while marijuana states just accepted the ball-and-chain version of legalization and called it a win.

The Future is Obvious

Legal marijuana states should be dominating the cannabis market. Instead, they’re watching from the sidelines while hemp states take over. It’s a modern-day tortoise-and-hare situation, except the hare isn’t just sleeping—it’s actively setting itself on fire.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina and other hemp-friendly states, we’re moving forward:
✅ Selling across state lines
✅ Offering stronger products without pointless limits
✅ Giving customers what they actually want

The marijuana industry had the chance to create a true free market. Instead, they built a system that’s about as consumer-friendly as a toll booth. And now, the hemp industry is eating their lunch.

So let them whine. Let them call it “not real weed” while they secretly stock their own shelves with hemp-derived THC products. Let them tax their customers into oblivion while we keep prices fair.

Because at the end of the day, we already won.

The Wars fought over ideology. Wars fought over pride, power, and profit. And then there’s the most useless battle of them all—the great online pissing match over whether we call something hemp or marijuana.

This is a fight about words, nothing more. An exhausting, circular argument where one side screams “IT’S JUST WEED!” while the other clutches their pearls and hisses, “No, it’s HEMP!” But in the end, it’s the same damn plant, the same damn cannabinoids, and the same damn effects. It’s a farce, a semantic game played by people who, deep down, are just bitter about the fact that hemp states—especially those of us in North Carolina—are out here living better.

Let’s get something straight: Hemp and marijuana are just legal terms, artificially crafted distinctions that exist solely to keep lawyers and bureaucrats employed. The difference? A laughable 0.3% Δ9-THC limit. That’s it. But whether a bud tests at 0.29% or 0.31%, it’s still Cannabis sativa. It still gets converted into the same potent edibles, vapes, and pre-rolls. And here in North Carolina, we get to enjoy all of it—without being treated like criminals, without insane taxes, and without jumping through flaming bureaucratic hoops just to sell a damn gummy.

Meanwhile, the marijuana dispensary crowd is foaming at the mouth, gnashing their teeth at the injustice of it all. They’re paying obscene taxes, getting strangled by regulations, and watching their customers get treated like shady street dealers just for wanting a bag of edibles. And worst of all? They know damn well that the hemp industry is thriving while they’re stuck in their Kafkaesque nightmare of red tape and government overreach.

It’s jealousy, plain and simple.

See, in a legal marijuana state, a dispensary has to sell only within that state, navigate an ever-growing pile of regulations, and pray that local lawmakers don’t decide to pull the rug out from under them. In a hemp state like North Carolina? We can sell across state lines, offer the same flower, and pump out better, stronger, more affordable edibles—without sending our customers through a police-state checkpoint just to make a purchase.

And let’s not even start on the hypocrisy. Marijuana dispensaries will spend all day screaming that hemp flower is "fake weed," only to turn around and sell vapes packed with delta-8, delta-10, THC-P, and whatever new cannabinoid science can squeeze out of the plant. If hemp-derived THC is so illegitimate, then why the hell are their shelves filled with it?

The real tragedy here isn’t the terminology. It’s that legal marijuana states could have fought for true legalization—one without punishing taxes, ridiculous product restrictions, and DEA-style paranoia. Instead, they got stuck in a system that treats cannabis like a controlled substance rather than an agricultural product, while hemp states found the loophole and ran with it.

So let the marijuana crowd whine. Let them rage against the term hemp as if it changes the fact that we’ve already won. Because at the end of the day, the only real difference between hemp and marijuana is who’s making the rules—and who’s smart enough to find a way around them.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

The Ultimate Stoner Time A time before 9/11, before social media turned everyone into an amateur political analyst, and before gas prices made you consider taking up longboarding as a legitimate mode of transportation? Well, my friend, let me take you back to those golden days. And what better way to do that than with the return of the greatest baked gaming experience of all time? I’m talking about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

This is the hall-of-fame, all-time, roll-one-up-and-zone-out classic. Nothing—and I mean nothing—hits quite like chaining together a million-point combo in Warehouse while Goldfinger’s Superman blasts through the speakers. It’s that perfect blend of nostalgia, flow state, and pure button-mashing bliss. And now, after years of ups, downs, and corporate shenanigans, it looks like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is finally clawing its way back to existence.

If you’ve been paying attention, you know that THPS 3+4 was supposed to drop in 2022. But then, like a botched trick off the halfpipe, it just... vanished. Activision and developer Vicarious Visions had some kind of shake-up, and just like that, the dream was dead. Or so we thought. Because now, my fellow late-night gamers, the Birdman himself has been dropping hints that 3+4 might finally be back in play.

So yeah, maybe 20 years have passed since you last nailed a perfect kickflip McTwist in Los Angeles, and maybe now you’ve got actual responsibilities, a job, maybe even a kid. But here’s the good news: at some point soon, you’ll be able to put that baby to sleep, knock out those chores, and then fire up Pro Skater 3+4 like it’s 2001 all over again. And that, my friends, is a victory worth celebrating.

A Brief History of Gaming’s Greatest Franchise

Back in 1999, when skateboarding was on the rise and baggy jeans were still socially acceptable, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater dropped and changed gaming forever. The series hit its peak with THPS 2 in 2000, which became an instant classic and solidified the franchise as an all-time great. For over a decade, these games dominated, releasing new titles on a yearly basis and keeping us glued to our controllers. But then came the dark days—THPS 5 in 2015 was so bad it killed the franchise.

For five years, Tony Hawk games were extinct. Then, in 2020, the glorious return: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remastered everything we loved, brought back the iconic soundtracks, and sold a million copies in two weeks. It was a hit, proving that skateboarding nostalgia is as strong as ever. Now, with 3+4 supposedly on the horizon, we’re looking at the return of yet another masterpiece.

So roll up, grab your controller, and get ready. Because sooner or later, we’re going back to a time when all that mattered was landing that perfect trick line and laughing with your friends. And honestly, isn’t that what life’s all about?

The Hereo's We All Need

Cheech and Chong are back for a bag of the good stuff, and enough stoner wisdom to turn a Chekhov tragedy into a Saturday night cartoon. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong didn’t just make weed funny—they made it essential. Icons of the outlaw era, prophets of the green gospel, and, dare I say it, the heroes we need right now.

And here they come again, like time-traveling shamans of cannabis enlightenment, barreling back into our collective consciousness with Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie. Set to spark up theaters with a limited release on April 20 (of course—because what else would you expect?), this is no mere nostalgia trip. It’s a reminder that these two legends still hold the keys to the kingdom of counterculture cool.

The trailer alone is pure Cheech and Chong magic. Picture this: a black Cadillac slicing through the desert heat, a marijuana leaf hood ornament glinting under a sun hotter than Satan’s sauna. “You sure we’re going the right way?” Cheech deadpans. Chong fires back with that eternal, slow-burn irritation: “We’re in the middle of fucking nowhere.” And just when you think it can’t get better, Cheech lands the knockout punch: “No, we’re southwest of fucking nowhere. We’re not in the middle yet.” It’s classic, baked-in brilliance—proof that after all these years, their timing is still tighter than a pre-rolled joint.

This isn’t just a reunion; it’s a revival of the rebel spirit that first lit the cultural fuse back in 1978’s Up in Smoke. That film wasn’t just a stoner comedy—it was an act of defiance, a sweet, sticky middle finger to the straight-laced establishment. Over 25 films later, Cheech and Chong are still here, still laughing, and still proving that cannabis isn’t just about getting high—it’s about freedom, creativity, and telling the powers-that-be to take a long walk off a short pier.

With legendary producer Lou Adler joining the ride, and David Bushell at the helm as director and producer (alongside Robbi Chong), this flick is shaping up to be more than just another trip down memory lane. It’s a love letter to their entire legacy—a reminder that these two didn’t just shape stoner comedy, they shaped a movement.

Let’s not forget: when Cheech and Chong were cracking jokes about the magic herb, they weren’t riding a wave of legalization. They were rebels—risk-takers playing in a world where a joint could still wreck your life. They didn’t just break the rules; they rolled them up, lit them, and passed them around for the whole world to enjoy. And now, with legalization sweeping the nation, it feels like the world has finally caught up with their vision.

Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie might be billed as the end of the road, but let’s be real—it’s more like passing the torch. These two legends deserve every ounce of recognition as cultural pioneers, comedic geniuses, and accidental political activists who helped pave the way for the legal cannabis movement we’re riding high on today.

So, as April 20 rolls around, fire up something special, settle into your favorite couch groove, and remember: Cheech and Chong aren’t just back—they never really left. And maybe, just maybe, they’re the heroes we need right now.

Was Jimmy Carter A Cannabis Reformer ?

By Tripp The year was 1977—a time when, supposedly, there was no political strife, no inflation, no world conflict. Surely you remember those times, right? I digress.

In his first year as president, Carter urged Congress to decriminalize low-level cannabis possession. He stated:

"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself."

He continued:

"I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana. This decriminalization is not legalization. It means only that the Federal penalty for possession would be reduced, and a person would receive a fine rather than a criminal penalty. Federal penalties for trafficking would remain in force, and the states would remain free to adopt whatever laws they wish concerning the marijuana smoker."

Nearly 50 years after Carter’s call to “eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana,” those harsh laws—a minimum fine of $1,000 and up to a year in jail—are still on the books. Seriously?

This is arguably the most unifying issue in the American political landscape today. People overwhelmingly support legal access to cannabis. And as Americans, so should we all. This is not complicated. Giving adults the freedom to choose how to consume a plant should be a no-brainer.

This "freedom" leads to businesses like ours investing in retail real estate when others are pulling out. We hire people and pay above-average wages at a time when other industries are cutting back. We’re contributing millions to the tax digest. This issue is a win-win for everyone.

And, if I may say, we’re making people happier at a time when we could all use a little more chill. So, let’s not mourn Carter’s passing. Instead, let’s celebrate his life and the fact that he held progressive views on cannabis. Let’s continue this bipartisan push for common-sense legislation. It’s only freedom, after all.

SIDEBAR:

Last Prisoner Project

At all Apotheca Dispensary locations, customers are asked to round up their purchases.
